June 30, 2020 – ATAC is proud to announce the win of two NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 projects, both focused on Urban Air Mobility (UAM). In one project, ATAC is collaborating with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to develop a Low Altitude Wind Hazard Alerting and Rerouting (LAWHAR) service for UAM operations. The LAWHAR service is focused on providing accurate, microscale wind speed, wind shear, and turbulence predictions across urban areas to help ensure the safety of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (e-VTOL) flights.
In a second project, ATAC is developing a software system called the Quiet UAM Impact Path Planning (QUIPP) Tool for generating e-VTOL aircraft flight paths that minimize noise impacts within the UAM on-demand environment. Use of QUIPP adds agility, scalability, and adaptability to dynamic route planning while minimizing the noise impact of UAM flights to gain local community acceptance, which is a critical issue to UAM success.
