The Position

ATAC has an opening for an Aviation Programmer Analyst. This is a full-time mid-level staff position and is located in Washington, DC. The successful candidate will participate in the analysis of aviation data to support research on trajectory-based air traffic performance measures of current and new capabilities and will provide support in analytic programming and data system management to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and maintaining National Airspace System (NAS) web-based data visualization and processing tools
  • Developing and maintaining algorithms and code that support air traffic analysis efforts and aviation trajectory measures
  • Accessing flight trajectory databases, interfacing with weather data, developing performance metrics, visualizing information (including maps), and validating data
  • Coordinating activities with data providers
  • Assisting management and other staff in understanding and using data
  • Providing technical input into system documentation and user guides
  • Working closely with government aviation users/customers

Qualifications

Required attributes include

  • BS degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields, and3 or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience creating browser-based visualization tools and dashboards using JavaScript, Tableau, R Shiny, and/or similar technologies
  • Experience in Python and R programming languages
  • Experience with Oracle SQL/PostgreSQL
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relations skills

 

Desired attributes include:

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields and 1 or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience with geographical information systems (GIS) and/or geo-computational methods
  • Experience using Git version control
  • Experience in Java, C++ and object-oriented methodologies
  • Experience in html and web interfaces
  • Air traffic data analytical expertise (especially with air traffic trajectory data and large data sets)
  • A strong interest in the aviation field and solid understanding of the NAS and FAA objectives

The Position

ATAC has an opening for a Rotorcraft Safety Research Summer Intern. This is a paid internship for the duration of the summer of 2022 and will be located on-site at the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC) in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated member of ATAC’s WJHTC team and will support various research efforts including aviation safety research.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing flight and simulator video data and marking it at pre-developed safety events.
  • Downloading and copying data from test activities.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis including reviewing, classifying, and categorizing flight and simulation data.
  • Supporting the development of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and other related graphics.
  • Supporting the development of websites and other project materials.
  • Supporting the development of test heliports, flight procedures, and test scenarios.
  • Developing models and analytical tools using big data and high-performance computing tools.

The Position

ATAC has an opening for an Aviation Research Intern. This is a paid internship and will be located at our headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The successful candidate will participate in the analysis of aviation related performance data from a variety of sources including the Performance Data Analysis and Reporting System (PDARS), a system for the automatic collection, analysis and reporting of aviation performance measurements. The candidate will also participate in simulation and modeling of air traffic operations using a variety of aviation simulation tools.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of air traffic data
  • Application of visualization software to understand air traffic operations
  • Development of machine learning, neural networks, or other Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled software algorithms to find significant patterns in aviation-related data
  • Integration of advanced data mining techniques into ATAC research and commercial products
  • Interaction with aviation subject matter experts (SMEs) to incorporate their knowledge into machine learning and aviation data analytics algorithms
  • Development and deployment of aviation performance reports

Qualifications

Required attributes include

  • Current enrollment in a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in a STEM major
  • Familiarity with data mining, machine learning, Big Data, or AI algorithm development
  • Ability to quickly prototype and demonstrate software concepts in several languages, such as Python, Java, MATLAB, C# or Javascript
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with large data sets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relations skills
  • Good PC applications skills with office tools including Excel, PowerPoint and Word

 

Highly desired attributes include:

  • Major in aerospace, mechanical, electrical or systems engineering, operations research, applied mathematics, statistics or physics
  • Currently attending or planning to attend a graduate school program
  • Knowledge of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence-related software libraries
