ATAC has an opening for a Senior Aviation Research Engineer. This is a full-time position and is located in Santa Clara, California. The successful candidate will provide technical contributions to ATAC’s Research and Product Development Division for innovative research efforts and the design, development, and deployment of aviation information systems.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and participating in aviation focused research project from start to finish.
  • Formulating and defining integration scope and objectives based on user needs, specifications and research.
  • Developing data analytics & data-driven techniques & applying them to model/solve real-world aviation problems.
  • Integrating advanced data mining techniques into ATAC research and commercial products.
  • Interacting with aviation subject matter experts (SMEs) to incorporate their knowledge into data analytics algorithms.
  • Conducting independent technical investigations supporting research and product development.
  • Writing research papers for aviation research conferences and preparing proposals for research projects.

 

Work may include:

 

  • Application of techniques such as machine learning, neural networks, or other Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled software algorithms to find significant patterns in aviation and related data.

The Position

ATAC has an opening for an Aviation Research Intern. This is a paid internship and will be located at our headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The successful candidate will participate in the analysis of aviation related performance data from a variety of sources including the Performance Data Analysis and Reporting System (PDARS), a system for the automatic collection, analysis and reporting of aviation performance measurements. The candidate will also participate in simulation and modeling of air traffic operations using a variety of aviation simulation tools.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of air traffic data.
  • Application of visualization software to understand air traffic operations.
  • Formulation of air traffic planning and scheduling scenarios as numerical optimization problems, especially linear and integer programming.
  • Development of machine learning, neural networks, or other Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled software algorithms to find significant patterns in aviation-related data.
  • Integration of advanced data mining techniques into ATAC research and commercial products.

Qualifications

Required attributes include

  • Current enrollment in a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in a STEM major.
  • Experience writing linear and mixed-integer programming models for planning and scheduling using solvers such as GNU Linear Programming Kit, Gurobi, and CPLEX.
  • Experience tuning linear and mixed-integer programming models, including improving performance and handling numerical issues.
  • Familiarity with data mining, machine learning, Big Data, or AI algorithm development.
  • Ability to quickly prototype and demonstrate software concepts in several languages, such as Python, Java, MATLAB, C#, or Javascript).
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with large data sets.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Good PC applications skills with office tools including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

 

Highly desired attributes include:

  • Major in aerospace, mechanical, electrical or systems engineering, operations research, applied mathematics, statistics or physics.
  • Currently attending or planning to attend a graduate school program.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence-related software libraries.

The Position

ATAC has an opening for an Air Traffic Control Systems Command Center Support Specialist. This is a full-time position and will be located at the FAA’s Air Traffic Control Systems Command Center in Warrenton, VA. The ideal candidate will have a commanding knowledge of air traffic control and traffic flow management and a solid technical background. The successful candidate will participate in the support of the FAA’s Air Traffic Organization (ATO) Performance Analysis Office (AJR-G) in multiple roles supporting air traffic control performance data analytics and reporting.

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Data analysis supporting advanced pre-tactical planning, day of operation execution, and post-operational reviews.
  • Providing direct support to the National Operations Manager (NOM) and the team developing advanced traffic flow plans.
  • Collection and dissemination of weather data.
  • Provide reviews of weather forecast data and assess forecast accuracy.
  • Development and deployment of capacity impact forecasts.
  • Analysis of National Airspace System (NAS) performance utilizing existing FAA Planning Tools.
  • Use of tools and products to identify historically similar days and previous traffic flow management actions/performance.
  • Generation of PowerPoint slides, Excel spreadsheets and verbal communication to traffic planners.
  • Provide operational support to prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant incidents in the NAS.
  • Generate daily/weekly/monthly performance reports.
  • Generate analysis for Traffic Management Reviews.
  • Develop briefing materials for presentation to customers for events such as the National Collaboration Forum (NCF).
  • Provide training, performance analysis, support to traffic flow data analysis and application development.
