ATAC acquires the I-SIM (Integrated Simulation) software suite from Kongsberg Geospatial

Santa Clara, CA – October 18, 2024.  ATAC and Kongsberg Geospatial are pleased to announce that ATAC has completed the purchase of the I-SIM (Integrated Simulation) software suite. Since I-SIM’s initial development supporting the FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) in 1998, the FAA has used I-SIM’s high-fidelity Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) radar-based Air Traffic Control (ATC) simulations to enable controllers and managers to test, visualize, practice, and train using new operational concepts and procedures before implementation, using customizable air traffic scenarios generated automatically from actual air traffic data.

“This acquisition provides a great opportunity for ATAC to complement Kongsberg Geospatial’s proven, reliable, and cost-effective air traffic control radar simulation technology with ATAC’s 45+ years of experience in air traffic control simulation, analysis, and tool development for the FAA, NASA, Navy, and academic community.  With I-SIM, customers have access to the industry’s most realistic radar-based ATC simulation environment, allowing controllers to test new procedures and train on or practice working the most difficult scenarios on the busiest positions and sectors, using scenarios initialized with actual air traffic data.  I-SIM will also enhance the education of prospective controllers at colleges and universities with tools that have the same touch and feel of the equipment currently deployed at TRACONs and ARTCCs,” said Scott Simcox, President of ATAC.

Building on ATAC’s superior air traffic operations analysis, subject matter expertise, and simulation capabilities, ATAC will ensure the I-SIM platform continues to present the most advanced and accurate emulation of STARS and ERAM in the industry.  From I-SIM’s initial development supporting CAMI to its deployment to FAA College Training Initiative (CTI) schools, and its proven effectiveness through FAA NAS airspace modernization projects and the U.S. Navy’s application of the I-SIM-based embedded trainer throughout the fleet, I-SIM will continue to serve the industry as the premier radar-based ATC simulation system.

About I-SIM

I-SIM is a commercially available simulation system used for Air Traffic Control training, performance enhancement, airspace design/analysis, and HITL simulations. I-SIM comprises a high-fidelity radar simulation suite that supports both Enroute and terminal operations, delivered with fully functional STARS, ERAM, and Enroute Decision Support Tool (EDST) display applications. Its multi-platform capability provides unparalleled realism in simulation, with the flexibility and scalability required to train, monitor, and track controller progress throughout a facility, whether onsite or in a remote environment.

Key capabilities of the I-SIM system include a network-centric architecture that allows radar-based ATC simulation participants including TRACON and/or ARTCC controllers, managers, and remote pilot operators (RPOs) to participate remotely from any number of locations.  I-SIM automatically generates scenarios from actual air traffic and features hardware that provides controllers with the most realistic simulation environment in the industry.

In a military environment, controllers can conduct airspace and procedure familiarization training prior to arriving at their areas of responsibility. The I-SIM embedded trainer application is deployed to all U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships.  This integrated embedded training system provides enhanced initial and proficiency training capability for Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC) and Amphibious Air Traffic Control Centers (AATCC) controllers, greatly improving Fleet Readiness.
